I want to stand and stare again
Til there’s nothing left out, oh
It remains there in your eyes
Whatever comes and goes
I will hear your silent call
I will touch this tender wall
Til I know I’m home again
Ooh
In your eyes (in your eyes)
In your eyes (in your eyes)
In your eyes (in your eyes)
In your eyes
Love I get so lost, sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away
I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go
I come back to the place you are
(chorus)
And all my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In your eyes
The light the heat
In your eyes
I am complete
In your eyes
I see the doorway (in your eyes) to a thousand churches
In your eyes
The resolution (in your eyes) of all the fruitless searches
In your eyes
I see the light and the heat
In your eyes
Oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
The heat I see in your eyes
In your eyes
In your eyes
Love, I don’t like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
(chorus)
Accepting all I’ve done and said
I want to stand and stare again
Til there’s nothing left out, oh
It remains there in your eyes
Whatever comes and goes
Oh it’s in your eyes
- Peter Gabriel "In Your Eyes"
Trakis had sent Adira to find a list of the Ambassador’s contacts in the court but instead she had stolen a picture. It was tucked away and as she looked at the mischievous grin and the glitter in his eyes she knew he probably hated it. He probably thought he didn’t look stern enough but Adira; she was enamored with the picture and sat sideways in the large armchair grinning and admiring the picture.
She was lost in his eyes. Every time she heard the word she thought of a man with bright, mischievous and flirtatious eyes and his certainly brought the word to mind as well. “Blue” and they were amazingly blue. She giggled at her own thoughts. She was giddy and nervous in his presence only because of his eyes.
Give that to me.
She was about to protest as the picture slid from her fingers until she saw the frowning face that it’s removal revealed.
“Trakis! I thought you would come later.
She was on her feet as his grimace turned to displeasure. She backed away as his eyes fell on her.
Do you have what I have asked you to retrieve?
Adira heard the tearing and knew what was happening. The pieces fluttered from Trakis’ hands to the ground. Briefly she saw the remnants of the photo and his blue eyes fall to the floor. “I don’t want to do this anymore.” she thought but the whining of the slaver’s glove quickly removed all desire for rebellion. It burned and she cried, he humiliated her with it and there was no escape. Her mind raced to produce an excuse for her lack of information. Looking away she spoke quietly.
He is going to a meeting with the Narn this evening… I ….I will do it then.
He smiled.
That is a good Centauri.
He grinned and patted her on the head like a dog. He did it because he knew it bothered her, broke her. She looked at the scraps on the floor. Hesitantly she reached for them; she wanted to piece the picture back together.
As her fingers touched them she cried out, Trakis’ boot crushing her fingers to the floor. He bent down using his gloved hand to turn her face to his. She wanted desperately to pull away and free her fingers.
You’re not getting soft on that blue-eyed fool, are you?
He was angry and the finger that controlled the glove began to twitch nervously. She shook her head “no”. She had lied about so much where the ambassador was concerned and she refused to continue to speak as though she cared nothing for him. She looked back to him as he ground his boot on her fingers and another small cry slipped from her lips. He wanted her to say it.
I just want to be free of you. I will do whatever you ask of me.
Trakis grinned maliciously and only reluctantly freed her fingers. Reflexively Adira pulled them to her. They felt broken.
You still remember our deal.
She shook her head yes and stared at the floor and the now scattered bits. He leaned close to her and whispered.
I hope you remember both of them.
She looked up as he walked out. Which deal was worse was hard to tell any longer; Death for failure or destroying the man she was falling in love with. She sighed slumping to the floor and gazed at the pieces of the picture now ruined by Trakis. Like everything he touched that was worth saving it now lay scattered and broken but she could still see his eyes on one of the scraps. His enchanting blue eyes, the eyes that looked into her soul and took hold of her hearts, the eyes she would have to betray again.
Adira buried her face into her knees and cried. There was no choice, no decision, she didn’t want to look in his eyes any longer and yet she couldn’t look away. Even through her tears her eyes returned to his in the tattered image and she knew the next time and probably every time after when she looked into his blue eyes it would be in deceit.
